Matt Lindahl - Adobe Trailer Motel
A long time ago, I received an album called The
Two Sides Of The Smothers Brothers. One side was typical
Smothers comedy, song parodies and sibling banter. The other side was
a wonderful collection of folk songs, performed by Tom and Dick Smothers,
without any attempt at humor. The two sides complemented each other perfectly.
If Matt Lindahl had been performing in those days, Adobe
Trailer Motel may very well have been that type of album.
Matt includes several dead-on country music tracks interspersed with humorous
songs, commercial parodies and comic bits. If you're a Roger Miller, Roy
Clark or Ray Stevens fan, you'll understand Matt Lindahl. His talent seems
directly descended from those icons of country music.
The exposure that Matt received from Nashville Star hasn't changed that the fact that he's just a good ole Southern boy. This shines through in his songs, from Grandma's Gravy to Grandpa's
Song. His lighthearted side is evident in Drinking
Song and Jump Off The Bridge. Cuts such as Bob's Flakes and Irish Father release Matt's outrageous sense of humor and are sure to leave a smile on your face.
My favorite tracks on the CD include I Woke
Up for the mental images it conjures ("rollin' on like
leaves pushed by the wind..."), Grandpa's
Song for its pure storytelling, Get
Out Of My Head, a humorous song about breaking up, and Irish
Father for its unabashed silliness - how can you not enjoy a song that even the performers laugh at when it's over?
If there's a drawback to this CD, it's the commercial parodies. They're funny enough, but they tend to interrupt the flow of the music. They don't ruin the CD by any means, but I still can't help wishing that Matt had left them out.
Mixing comedy with straight storytelling is a gutsy move, but I think Matt's got the personality and the charisma to pull it off.
